Basketball Schedule Detective, August 2023 Edition

I almost put the following news into the comments of the schedule post from last month, but I'm excited about one of the two games I'm going to update for the upcoming UT Arlington men's basketball season, so its own post it gets.

Rocco Miller broke two games this week on his Twitter account. The first is most likely a guarantee game against the New Mexico Lobos on November 16 in Albuquerque. The teams have met four times prior, including three in New Mexico, losing all four.

But the big news is that the UTA Texas State series that I speculated to coming is now known and the series continues. It looks like the rumors I received that Texas State played their half of a home-and-home contract in Fort Worth last year aren't true as College Park Center will host the Bobcats this year and the Mavericks travel to San Marcos next. The game is schedule for November 25.

Here's the schedule as we know it to this point:

  • Nov. 6 ORAL ROBERTS
  • Nov. 16 @ New Mexico
  • Nov. 19 @ Arizona
  • Nov. 22 ALCORN ST
  • Nov. 25 TEXAS ST
  • Nov. 29 ABILENE CHRISTIAN (WAC)
  • Dec. 2 @ Grand Canyon (WAC)
  • Dec. 16 Air Force (Dickie's Arena)
  • Jan. 1 @ UT-Austin
  • Jan. 4 @ Tarleton (WAC)
  • Jan. 6 @Stephen F. Austin (WAC)
  • Jan. 11 UTAH VALLEY (WAC)
  • Jan. 13 SEATTLE U (WAC)
  • Jan. 18 UT RIO GRANDE VALLEY (WAC)
  • Jan. 20 @Abilene Christian (WAC)
  • Jan. 27 GRAND CANYON (WAC)
  • Feb. 1 @Southern Utah (WAC)
  • Feb. 3 @Utah Tech (WAC)
  • Feb. 8 @California Baptist (WAC)
  • Feb. 10 STEPHEN F. AUSTIN (WAC)
  • Feb. 15 TARLETON (WAC)
  • Feb. 17 @UT Rio Grande Valley (WAC)
  • Feb. 22 SOUTHERN UTAH (WAC)
  • Feb. 24 UTAH TECH (WAC)
  • Feb. 29 @Seattle U (WAC)
  • March 2 @Utah Valley (WAC)
  • March 7 CALIFORNIA BAPTIST (WAC)

We also know that there is a road game against North Texas, likely in early December, but I have not seen a date yet.

So the announced dates give UTA 13 home games, a neutral game in Fort Worth and 14 road games, all against Division I teams. The NCAA caps regular season games to 28, so we know the full schedule.

There is no requirement for a multi-team event, or MTE. However, it could add up to three games at a neutral site or two games neutral and one road depending on who's hosting. That's the last piece I'm watching out for as the 2023/24 schedule detective.

Looking at what is there now, there's a little disappointment for the lack of early December home games, but just a little. Three November contests are nice and late December tends to be lightly attended and late December is average. Of the top-25 attended games in UTA history, one is early December, ten are in November and none are in late December.

But otherwise, I have zero complaints about this up-coming season's schedule. Quite the opposite. Good opponents dot the non-conference with good opportunities for some quality wins.

  1. A Twitter (now X) post by DI WBB Schedules has UTA playing at UT-Austin on the women's side (hence the WBB...) in Austin as a guarantee game on November 14.
