Arlington State Wins, 14-13
HAMMOND, La. (Sp.) - The Arlington State Rebels squeezed by the Southeastern Louisiana Lions, 14-13, here Saturday night for their first win in four tries.
The loss, in front of 5,500 Strawberry Stadium fans, left the Lions with a 1-2-1 season record. The Lions got 16 of their 20 first downs in the last two periods as the Texans drew a goose egg during the same time. Late in the first half Rebel quarterback Doug Wilson loft a 25-yard scoring pass to halfback Kenneth Vaugnn. Fullback Al Smith split the uprights to give Arlington a 7-0 lead with 47 seconds left in the period.
The Lions were forced to punt after the second half kickoff. Jimmy Campbell fielded it for the Rebs and raced 68 yards to score. Smith kicked again and ASC lead 14-0.
A short Arlington punt late in the third set up the first score for the Lions. Halfback Ellis Johnson went over from the one with 3 minutes left in the third. Brent Roussel picked the conversion.
Vaugnn picked off back to back Southeastern passes to stall the Lions' bid for a second score. Both interceptions were in the end zone. Vaugnn got out to the 7 and fumbled the first time. The second time Arlington was forced punt and the Lions took over on their own 42. They closed the gap in a dozen plays with halfback Jerry Dunwayplunging over from the 1.
The Lions failed in a run attempt with 4 minutes left. With 7 seconds left in the game Roussel attempted a field goal from the 18 only to have ASC guard David Busse crash through and block it.
